State of natural disaster to be declared

A state of natural disaster will be declared in municipalities hit by floods and a recovery programme will be adopted for them, Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic said Tuesday.

The post-flood recovery programme will be comprehensive and include all facilities and endangered properties, Vucic told reporters at the Kopaonik Business Forum.

Based on a proposal from the Public Investment Management Office to declare a state of natural disaster in some municipalities, the government will adopt the programme and also set aside additional funds for the Lucani municipality, where the floods have damaged the Milan Blagojevic defence industry plant, the prime minister said.

The damage is incomparably smaller than that in 2014 and has been prevented in several locations thanks to barriers and embankments that had been built meanwhile, he said.

The government will on Tuesday adopt several decrees and by-laws regulating assistance and support for citizens of the 14 flood-hit municipalities, Vucic said, adding that the scale of the floods is nowhere near that of the deluge that hit the country in 2014.

The government will be looking to compensate for nearly all of the damage to homes, auxiliary buildings and arable land, Vucic said at the Kopaonik Business Forum.
